Hi, I’m John
I’ve been diving for decades, and one thing never changes - the ocean deserves respect. I hold a current OutdoorsMark certification and over ten years of safety diving experience in high-risk environments. That background shapes how we train, how we lead, and how we dive at Oceans Alive. We keep it fun, but we take safety seriously - because when you’re confident in your environment, you enjoy it more. If you ever have questions about risk, training, or dive planning, I’m always happy to talk it through.
Let’s get you diving!

Know the Risks. Dive with Confidence.
Dive Smart. Stay Safe.
Understanding risk is part of being a responsible diver.
Scuba diving is an incredible experience — and when done properly, it’s considered a low-risk activity. But like any adventure sport, it comes with its own set of hazards. At Oceans Alive, we believe that being open about those risks is key to keeping divers safe and confident in the water.
Through the SSI training approach, we focus on four critical foundations: knowledge, skills, equipment, and experience. With the right training and awareness, most diving risks can be effectively managed or avoided. But it's important to know that no level of training or preparation can remove all risk entirely.
That’s why we’re serious about safety. Oceans Alive holds a current Qualworx certification, which confirms our compliance with the New Zealand Safety Audit Standard for Adventure Activities. This means our safety management systems are audited, verified, and upheld to a nationally recognised standard.
As a diver, you play a big role too. Using good judgement, maintaining awareness, showing respect for the environment, and listening to your body all help minimise risk during your time in the water. Safety isn't just about rules — it’s about mindset and responsibility.
